PLAN YOUR DAY OUT! FOR UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON WEATHER AND TIDESCLICK HERE An introduction to Sheringham & Cromer
Sheringham and Cromer are stunning seaside towns. Due to their development & growth they are larger than villages, but smaller than cities and are famous for their lobsters and crabs. Some say the name Sheringham is of Scandinavian origin and means The Ham of Scira's people. The placename 'Sheringham' is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Silingeham', and in 1242 as 'Scheringham', and is derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century personal name 'Scira', from 'scir', bright, fair, with the suffix 'ing(as)', meaning 'people of ', and 'ham', a village or homestead, thus the name means 'the village of Scira's people'. It is thought that Scira may have been a Viking warlord who was given the land as a reward for his performance in battle. Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheringham is located west of Cromer and comprises the two villages Upper Sheringham - known for its farming, and Lower Sheringham for its fishing. Sheringham is also a much loved railway town and historically the railways made it possible for fish to be transported to market and even to London!
In the early days when fishing was at its zenith there were plenty of boats . Today sadly, this number of boats has significantly declined. Sheringham appears rich in many things such as flint, many of its homes are made from flint and all looking very different in style & character. There are many alley ways and hidden little treasures such as pubs and fishermen's cottages. An important find was sighted coming out of the cliff to the west of Sheringham (pieces of elephant bone) dating back to some 1.5 million years. Amazing!!! More recently, flint & debris of planes presumably linking back to the war period, also debris of ships have been found along our shores. Flint picking off the shores has since been outlawed. Superstition has it that putting a piece of coal in your boat prevents ill fortune when out at sea.
Did you know that on 19 January 1915, Sheringham was the first known place in Britain to have a bomb dropped on it by a Zeppelin. Part of that bomb is on display in Sheringham's museum. Some of you may recall the worst storm ever to hit the North Norfolk coastline in 1953, with winds gusting up to 100mph which caused major flooding whereby both Sheringham and Cromer took a real battering and the unsung heroes saved many lives.
Today however, Sheringham has changed drastically and has so much to be proud of its past & present. The town offers everything you could expect and yet still retains its unique charm. If you have not already done so why not visit Sheringham's lively and bustling outdoor market - open every Wednesday April-November and every Saturday throughout the year. There are also many shops, art & crafty, food & cloth stores and much more. You will find plenty of food outlets where you can sample fish caught (fresh from the sea) & chips washed down by a beer or two. Don't forget to visit Sheringham Park. The park offers you one of the most attractive views of woodlands which in places you can climb to the tower top to see the park in all its glory. This is a peaceful and tranquil setting of miles of countryside paths to amble along the way. Spring time produces a spectacular display of Rhododendrons of all colours and size. Families and children will love the open space and hidden areas inbetween...this is an ideal picnic setting and has disability friendly access throughout. Toilets and refreshments are located within the car park.
While there - why not visit Sheringham's sandy beach & the RNLI or Theatre to name a few. Sheringham's Life Boat Station.
Cromer is only 4 miles east of Sheringham.
Henry Blogg Cromer Light House
Cromer Pier is described as late Victorian and is home to the Pavilion Theatre which is allegedly haunted by Dick Condon who was once a Manager there and likes to visit to oversee productions.
The first railway connected to Cromer in 1877, today it connects to Sheringham and as far as Norwich.
Cromer is known all over for its crab and the name Cromer means Crow's Pond...rather strange. Cromer is pronounced Croomer. Initially, Cromer started life as a fishing station and local fishermen fished all year round for crabs, lobsters and other fish depending on season. As with many things, the number of local fishermen and their boats have declined so that now there remains a small number of boats servicing the needs of local shops & restaurants.
HENRY G BLOGG GC, BEM is a well known famous coxswain of the lifeboat. He began his career when he was only 18 years old in 1894 and served for 53 years. He received the RNLI gold medal for heroism 3 times and the silver medal 4 times. Cromer's lifeboat station was founded in 1804 and in the 1920's Cromer had a lifeboat station built at the end of the pier. There have been a number of rescues over the years that Cromer and its people can be very proud of. Why not visit the RNLI HENRY BLOGG LIFEBOAT MUSEUM or THE CROMER MUSEUM (next to the church) which contains within (amongst many other things) a Victorian fisherman's cottage.
Cromer has had a lighthouse since 1669. The present lighthouse came into operation in 1883 and in 1990 it became automated. The light keepers cottage is now let out as a holiday apartment.
Cromer town, apart from its stunning location can offer the tourist and visitor many attractions and as indicated earlier, it would appear to have some well documented haunted locations such as the Hotel De-Paris. Obviously, the sea has claimed many lives, but there is a story relating to the ghost of a drowned girl and dog that has been seen. Also, Henry Blogg has been seen wandering around the old lifeboat house and there are many tales of sightings of Black Shuck (the ghostly dog with red glowing eyes) who allegedly walks the coast. It has been said that to look at black Shuck will bring death - perhaps smugglers have much to answer for here.
A chilling reminder from the past - Is it possible that unexplained paranormal activity within Cromer's homes, pubs and hotels maybe connected to the lost village of Shipden which was washed into the sea off Cromer? On rough and windy nights the bells of the submerged tower of St. Peter's Church is thought to be heard ringing out. The lost village of Shipden is thought to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1285 the king granted Cromer a Friday market and a yearly fair of eight days. By the 15th century the town was sufficiently prosperous for the large church of St Peter and St Paul to be built, replacing Shipden's original church.
If you get the chance why not visit Cromer's Methodist Church it has one of the finest displays of 20th-century carved oak in Norfolk. The church tower of St. Peter and St. Paul's in Cromer stands at a height of 160 feet and is believed to be the tallest church tower in the county. There is access to the top of the tower for a small fee - the views from there are stunning and well worth the climb to the top.
Did you know that Prince Edward (King Edward VII) came to Cromer to play golf and stayed with the Maharajah of Cooch Behar, who lived on Cliff Avenue? Also, Empress Elizabeth Of Austria stayed in a Cromer hotel in 1887 - although the name of the hotel is not known. Apparently, she had a form of paranoia and was very careful about her diet as she was worried about being poisoned.
It has also been stated that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited Cromer Hall and this became the inspiration for 'Baskerville Hall' in The Hound of the Baskervilles. It is also likely that he drew inspiration for the book from the Norfolk legend of Black Shuck - the terrible hell-hound with the fiery eyes. Others who raised Cromer's profile were Lord Tennyson, Oscar Wilde, A. C. Swinburne, Theodore Watts-Dunton, Winston Churchill and the German Kaiser. | 1879-1955
Albert Enstein visited Norfolk in 1933 after fleeing Germany. He lived for a short time in a hut on Roughton Heath, near Cromer.

In 1883 Clement Scott visited Cromer and was overwhelmed by the beauty of the surroundings. On his return to London he wrote to the Daily Telegraph referring to Cromer as Poppyland. A memorial fountain to Mr Scott can be found at the junction of Northrepps and Overstrand road in the town. Another point of interest is Beacon Hill, otherwise named as Roman Camp. It is a small but tranquil National Trust Park which encases Beacon Hill, thought to be the highest point above sea level and woodlands, and is within spitting distance of the sea and all other attractions. It is an ideal picnic setting with pathways to walk.
On Beacon's Hill there is an earthwork enclosure, otherwise named as the Roman Camp. This site is thought to have been a signal station/watch tower built during the times of the Napoleonic Wars. Located at West Runton, Cromer. Sat Nav NR27 9NDIn his younger years, the well known actor Stephen Fry got a job as a waiter in the Hotel De-Paris and earned £100.00 for his first weeks wages. It is impossible to end this brief introduction of Cromer without mentioning Keith Skipper. The journalist and broadcaster Keith Skipper who in 1999 helped set up Friends of Norfolk Dialect (F.O.N.D.) In 2007 he was awarded the MBE. Hats off to Keith! There is so much to see & experience. Enjoy!
